ISO 14001:2026 is published
ISO published ISO 14001:2026 on 15 April 2026, replacing ISO 14001:2015 (including the 2024 climate change amendment). Like the ISO 9001 update, the changes are moderate and aligned to ISO's Harmonized Structure — but every ISO 14001:2015-certified organization will need to transition.
The three-year transition window
A three-year transition period applies: certificates issued to ISO 14001:2015 must be transitioned to the new edition by 2029 to remain valid. As with any transition, the organizations that prepare early have the smoothest path.
What's changed in ISO 14001:2026
The new edition sharpens environmental management for today's priorities:
- Climate change and a wider environmental context — natural resource use, pollution and biodiversity now feature in analyzing the organization's context.
- A strengthened life-cycle perspective in the environmental aspects process.
- New requirements for planning and managing change.
- Operational control extended from outsourced processes to externally provided processes, products and services.
- Greater top-management accountability and a more structured management review, with expanded Annex A guidance.
What the transition involves
For an established EMS, expect to review rather than redesign: run a gap analysis against the 2026 requirements, update your environmental aspects, context and controls, train your leaders and internal auditors, and prepare for the transition audit with your certification body.
