ISO 9001:2026 is here
On 16 September 2026, ISO published ISO 9001:2026 — the sixth edition of the world's leading quality management standard, replacing ISO 9001:2015 (including the 2024 climate change amendment). It keeps the familiar Annex SL high-level structure, and the overall changes are moderate — less extensive than the jump to the 2015 edition. But if your organization is certified to ISO 9001:2015, you will need to transition.
The transition deadline you can't ignore
There is a three-year transition period. ISO 9001:2015 certificates will cease to be valid after 30 September 2029. The organizations that move early transition calmly and cheaply; the ones that wait end up scrambling near the deadline. Starting now is the smart, low-cost path.
What's changed in ISO 9001:2026
The refinements focus on making the standard clearer and more relevant to today's business:
- Quality culture and ethical behaviour are now part of leadership's responsibility (Clause 5.1.1), reinforced in awareness and the work environment.
- Clearer separation of risks and opportunities (Clause 6.1), with expanded guidance in Annex A.
- Climate change and sustainability are now explicit in the organization's context (Clause 4).
- Greater emphasis on organizational knowledge, digitalization, resilience and supply-chain / external providers.
- Expanded Annex A implementation guidance throughout.
What the transition actually involves
For most organizations it's a review-and-adjust, not a rebuild. The path is straightforward: obtain the new standard, run a gap analysis against your current QMS, update the affected processes, documented information and responsibilities, train your team on the changes, then confirm everything through internal audit and management review before your transition audit.
