What does PECB stand for?

PECB stands for the Professional Evaluation and Certification Board. It is a global certification body, headquartered in Montreal, Canada, that provides training, examination and certification for professionals against a wide range of ISO and compliance standards.

In plain terms: PECB is the organization that certifies the people who implement and audit the world's management-system standards. Its certifications are accredited under ISO/IEC 17024 — the international standard for bodies that certify persons — and are recognized in more than 150 countries.

What PECB actually does

PECB operates across three activities that work together: it develops accredited training courses, runs the examinations that test your competence, and issues the certifications that prove it. Its portfolio spans information security, privacy and data protection, quality management, risk management, business continuity, health and safety, sustainability and — more recently — artificial intelligence governance.

You take a PECB course through an accredited training partner (like KTMC Global), sit the exam, and on passing you earn a credential such as PECB Certified ISO/IEC 27001 Lead Implementer.

PECB vs ISO — what's the difference?

This trips a lot of people up. ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) writes the standards — documents like ISO/IEC 27001 or ISO 9001. ISO does not certify individuals. PECB certifies people against those standards. So you don't get “certified by ISO” as a person; you earn a PECB certification that shows you understand and can apply an ISO standard.

Why a PECB credential matters

Because it is accredited and internationally recognized, a PECB certification does three useful things: it travels (respected by employers at home and abroad), it differentiates you from candidates with experience but no verified credential, and it compounds — stacking Foundation, Lead and a second standard builds a profile that moves you into senior roles.
