ISO 14001:2026 was published on 15 April 2026, and a three-year transition period applies — ISO 14001:2015 certificates must move to the new edition by 2029 to stay valid. As always, the organizations that start early transition most smoothly. Use the checklist below to plan the work.
Your ISO 14001:2026 transition checklist
Work through these ten steps in order:
- Get the new standard. Obtain an official copy of ISO 14001:2026.
- Brief top management. The new edition places greater accountability on leadership for driving environmental performance.
- Run a gap analysis of your current EMS against the 2026 requirements.
- Update your organizational context to address climate change and a wider set of environmental conditions — natural resource use, pollution and biodiversity.
- Review your environmental aspects with a strengthened life-cycle perspective.
- Add planning and managing change requirements to your EMS.
- Extend operational controls from outsourced processes to externally provided processes, products and services.
- Train leaders and internal auditors on the revised requirements.
- Run an internal audit and management review against the 2026 edition.
- Book your transition audit with your certification body — early, before the rush.
Where teams get stuck
The common traps: leaving it late, treating the transition as a full redesign (for an established EMS it's usually review-and-adjust), and overlooking the life-cycle and supply-chain angle now that operational control extends to externally provided processes, products and services. Plan for those early.
