Start with the deadline

ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026, and there's a three-year transition period: ISO 9001:2015 certificates cease to be valid after 30 September 2029. The earlier you start, the smoother and cheaper it is — leave it late and you're competing for auditor time near the deadline. Use the checklist below to plan it out.

Work through these ten steps in order:

1. Get the new standard. Obtain an official copy of ISO 9001:2026 (and the ISO 9000:2026 terms).
2. Brief leadership. Quality culture and ethical behaviour are now a leadership responsibility — make sure top management understands their expanded role.
3. Run a gap analysis of your current QMS against the 2026 requirements.
4. Update your context (Clause 4) to explicitly address climate change and sustainability.
5. Rework risks and opportunities to reflect the clearer separation in Clause 6.1 and the expanded Annex A guidance.
6. Refresh documented information, roles, responsibilities and quality objectives where the gap analysis flags changes.
7. Train your people on what's new so the changes are understood and applied, not just written down.
8. Run an internal audit against the 2026 requirements to confirm the updates work in practice.
9. Hold a management review to evaluate readiness and close any remaining gaps.
10. Book your transition audit with your certification body — early, before the rush.
